The National Demolition Association is conducting its 2012 17th Demolition Academy at Grand Hyatt in San Antonio Texas. This year the Academy is scheduled right before the 39th Annual Convention enabling participants to stay on for the Convention.

Classes will be held March 9th and 10th and include the following:

1. OSHA 10-hour Demolition Specific Program - NDA Board Member Mike Casbon of ERM and other members of the NDA Safety Committee. The NDA’s “demolition-specific” OSHA 10-hour training course covers all the elements of the federal agency’s training requirements for the demolition process including Introduction to OSHA; the “Focus Four” Hazards of electrical, falls, caught between & struck by; personal protective equipment; health hazards in construction; hand & power tools; scaffolding; excavations; general jobsite safety; and safety issues specific to a demolition work site (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.800, Subpart T). This 10-hour program, presented over two days, provides an OSHA completion card.

2. Industrial Hygiene 101 - NDA Past President Ray Passeno, CIH, CHMM of Bierlein Companies. This class covers basic industrial hygiene for non-industrial hygienists including why industrial hygiene is important for demolition contractors, air monitoring equipment including direct reading instruments and interpretation of sample results.

3. Universal Waste Identification, Removal, Packaging and Disposal – NDA Environmental Committee Chairman Jason Haus of Dem-Con Companies. This class covers the regulatory requirements for universal waste removal and the proper techniques for recognizing, removing, packaging and disposing of universal wastes.

4. Project Management - Dr. Mark Shaurette of Purdue University. Those attending this session will see how a demolition project progresses from project award to close-out. Emphasis will be placed on demolition site management with the addition of planning considerations and offsite interactions that a demolition project manager has to administer to keep the project moving.
