One of the major services provided by the National Demolition Association involves occupational health & safety (OSH) and environmental protection. Throughout its history, the National Demolition Association has been the source for information on OSH and environmental issues.
In many cases, the Association has been in the forefront of helping governmental agencies develop the rules that affect the Demolition
Industry. The National Demolition Association has been designated a major stakeholder on a number of important issues such as the
handling of small quantities of hazardous waste, lead-in-construction, and silica.
Through its Safety and Environment Committees, the Association has developed close working relationships with regulators at the U.S. EPA, OSHA, NIOSH and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Members of the our Safety Committee serve on the American National Standards Institute's A10.6 committee which develops the ANSI code of safe practice for demolition.
Committee members and the National Demolition Association's Executive Director have testified before open hearings on a number of
important safety and environmental issues in Washington and at meetings across the country. The Association has a long history of
promoting the views of the nation's demolition contractors to the regulatory community. From the famous Adamo v. the EPA back in the
early 1970's through the development of the recent proposed rule dealing with the disposal of lead-in-construction architectural debris,
the National Demolition Association has been very proactive representing our members.
The National Demolition Association believes it is important for members of the Association to be aware of the health & safety and
environmental affairs assets available to them.
The Association subscribes to a number of services that provide indepth information and analysis of all occupational safety & health
and environmental regulations.
Through the Bureau of National Affairs' Occupational Safety & Health Reporter and Environment Reporter, the National Demolition
Association can provide its members with information on all federal statutes, regulations, guidance documents, forms and executive orders
dealing with these important issues.
Our safety library includes information on all OSHA rules, information from the National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) and numerous state programs. In conjuntion with the National Demolition Association's Demolition Safety Manual and Hazard Communication Program, these resources can prove invaluable to demolition contractors developing their own company-specific health & safety plan.
The National Demolition Association's environmental library can provide contractors with information on EPA rules and programs, existing
laws, proposed regulations, guidance documents, forms and various administrative orders. The library has information on air, water, solid
waste and hazardous material regulations.
As the Demolition Industry is one of the leading proponents of recycling its waste stream, the National Demolition Association has a host
of information on the management of C&D debris, recycling technologies, and state solid waste & recycling regulations. Through a
longstanding relationship with the European Demolition Association, the National Demolition Association has access to recycling information
being developed in Western Europe for the European Union.
The Association can provide its members with information on these issues through its extensive network with other construction trade associations. The Association also subscribes to the Federal Register to monitor the progress of rules and programs being developed by the Federal Government. In addition to these specific resources, the Association subscribes to just about every health & safety and environmental affairs publication available. The National Demolition Association has its own lead-in-construction program developed under an OSHA Office of Training grant. We have safety films covering topics such as New Employee Orientation to the Demolition Jobsite and Skid Steer Safety. Many are available in both English and Spanish. All of these programs are listed in the National Demolition Association's online Gift and Safety Catalog and can be purchased using a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express from Association headquarters in Doylestown, PA.
Over the years, the Association has developed an extensive network of information sources within government agencies in Washington, D.C. and
around the country. If a demolition contractor has a particular problem with an OSHA or EPA rule, the National Demolition Association can provide
background information and compliance assistance. In many cases, the Association can help a contractor get to the right person to talk to about
their problem.
The National Demolition Association also can provide information on legislative initiatives up on Capitol Hill. If individual members are concerned with specific pieces of legislation, the National Demolition Association can arrange contacts with Senate and House staff members to clarify these issues.
