Thermostat Recycling Corporation
|
Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC) is a not-for-profit organization that facilitates the collection and proper disposal of mercury-containing thermostats. Participating in the program is a simple and easy way to “go green” and help keep mercury out of the environment. Once the mercury-containing thermostat is removed and becomes waste, bring the whole thermostat to a participating wholesaler or collection location. When mercury-containing thermostats reach end-of-use and become waste, it is important to ensure that they are properly disposed. Mercury-containing thermostats contain between 3-12 grams of mercury and pose a risk to the environment and our health if the waste is not handled properly.
Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC)
Founded voluntarily in 1998 by Honeywell, White-Rodgers, and General Electric, TRC now represents 28 manufacturers that historically sold mercury thermostats. TRC has placed recycling containers in 47 states and has collected nearly one million mercury-containing thermostats since the program’s inception.
How the Program Works
TRC is a national program and operates as a reverse distribution system. TRC provides recycling containers to eligible collection locations for a modest, one-time participation fee. The fee is currently $25 per container.
Find a Collection Point
TRC wants to work with you to ensure mercury-containing thermostats don’t end up in solid-waste. The disposal of mercury-containing products is regulated in many states, and regardless of the law it’s the right thing to do. You can find a collection point from the web site simply by entering your postal zip code.
