Florida DEP 75% Recycling Goal
|
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has created a plan to help the state
reach a 75% recycling goal by 2020 as a result of the states Energy, Climate Change and
Economic Security Act of 2008. The plan requires participation from state agencies, school
districts, apartment and condominium complexes, and hospitals. Unlined construction and
demolition debris landfills will be required to incorporate a Materials Recovery Facility.
Florida DEP 75% Recycling Goal
The Energy, Climate Change, and Economic Security Act of 2008 (House Bill 7135) signed into law by Governor Crist created Section 403.7032, Florida Statutes. This establishes a new statewide recycling goal of 75% to be achieved by the year 2020. Also, the statute directs DEP to develop a program designed to achieve this goal and submit it to the Legislature for approval by January 1, 2010.

"The 75% recycling goal is the highest of any state," DEP Secretary Michael Sole said. "It will be a challenge to achieve, but it can be reached through partnerships among state government, local governments, trade organizations, schools, businesses and industries as well as the people of Florida." The DEP estimates Florida residents recycle 28% of the 32 million tons of municipal solid waste generated each year. The state legislature must approve the plan before it becomes law.
